About Wakadogo
Gulu District, located in the northern part of Uganda, is home to the Acholi people, who are the main inhabitants of the region. With a variety of spoken languages including Luo, Swahili, English, and Luganda, Gulu is a diverse and vibrant community.
The district has faced numerous challenges, with a 23-year conflict displacing over 1.7 million people and resulting in Internally Displaced Person's camps that lacked basic amenities and access to education. In addition, thousands of children were abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army.
Amidst these difficulties, Wakadogo School emerged as a beacon of hope. Since 2007, it has been serving the community, working closely with local leaders, parents, and students. The school's mission is to rebuild the community by providing education to the children of those who experienced the traumas of war. Sending their children to school marks a significant milestone for the parents, teachers, and the entire community.
Wakadogo School is dedicated to involving the community in its management and the children's learning. The School Management Committee, Parent Teacher Association, and student clubs play an active role in ensuring the school's success.
Wakadogo School is a project by Project Shelter, a Canadian registered charity, and it operates under the NGO Board of Uganda. This initiative is driven by a passion for rebuilding and nurturing a brighter future for the Acholi people.
