Wake Up North is a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Northern Michigan that teaches children and teens to wakesurf. Its mission is to give young people access to the lake, a properly equipped boat, and patient, experienced instruction, while creating memorable experiences and the satisfaction of learning a new skill. The program focuses primarily on ages 10 to 17, although wakesurfing can suit people of many ages and fitness levels.
Lessons take place in the Traverse City area during the season, from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Riders learn to stand using a tow rope, steer into the boat’s wake, and eventually ride the wave’s push without being towed. Wake Up North operates a 2017 MasterCraft NXT22 with a surf system, adjustable ballast, surf tabs, and GPS-based speed control.
Sessions generally include no more than six riders to allow for space, comfort, and personal attention. The organization depends on donations and volunteer support; donations are tax-deductible charitable contributions
