The Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction is a highly esteemed literary award celebrating exceptional writing in historical novels. Established 16 years ago by the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch, the Prize honors the legacy of Sir Walter Scott, the founding father of historical fiction. Each year, a prize of £25,000 is awarded to the winner, with shortlisted authors receiving £1,500 each. The Prize is open to novels published in the previous year across the UK, Ireland, and the Commonwealth, focusing on stories set at least 60 years in the past.
Managed by The Abbotsford Trust, the Prize has recognized over 160 historical novels while distributing more than £400,000 to authors. In addition to the prestigious Walter Scott Prize, the Young Walter Scott Prize encourages creativity among youth aged 11 to 19, offering opportunities for publication and mentorship. Supporting initiatives like the "Imagining History" workshops, the Prize fosters a vibrant community dedicated to the art of historical storytelling.
