The Wireless Application Service Providers’ Association (WASPA) was formed in 2004, to serve as a self-regulatory body with a mandate to represent and regulate its voluntary members, which provide mobile-based Value-Added Services within South Africa. As well as representing the interests of WASPA’s members, WASPA plays a key role in regulating the provision of mobile applications and services in South Africa. WASPA has a detailed Code of Conduct which all members of the Association must adhere to and a well-established formal complaints process. WASPA employs full-time staff to monitor the services provided by its members and to handle complaints about WASP services lodged by members of the public.

About WASPA
Waspa is the Wireless Application Service Providers' Association, a self-regulatory body formed in 2004. Their mission is to represent and regulate their voluntary members, who are mobile-based Value Added Service (VAS) providers, also known as WASPs. To ensure industry standards, membership with a recognized Code of Conduct is compulsory for all WASPs by Telkom Mobile, Cell C, MTN, and Vodacom.
To enforce their rules, Waspa has developed a comprehensive complaints handling process that is independent of their board. Anyone can lodge a complaint, and each complainant is given a reference number. Complaints are processed by an independent secretariat, with the adjudication carried out by a panel of ICT lawyers.
In cases of immediate consumer harm, an emergency panel of adjudicators may shut down offending services before a formal adjudication. Waspa also has a compliance department that checks advertising and tests services daily for compliance with their Code of Conduct. They are an active member of the International Audiotext Regulators Association.
Overall, Waspa is committed to ensuring a fair and transparent mobile-based VAS industry for both consumers and service providers
