Waterbirth International (WBI) is an education, training, and advocacy organization dedicated to advancing the science, safety, and accessibility of water birth. Since 1988, it has supported parents and birth care professionals worldwide through research resources, professional education, provider certification, hospital consulting, and advocacy. Founded and led by Barbara Harper, a registered nurse and internationally recognized water birth educator, WBI draws on more than four decades of experience and has trained over 20,000 birth professionals.
WBI offers online certification courses for midwives, nurses, doctors, doulas, and birth advocates, as well as group and onsite training for providers and hospitals. Its courses cover current research and practical techniques for incorporating water birth into clinical care, with opportunities to connect through a global professional network. The organization also provides information for parents, shares water birth resources and stories, and maintains a directory of providers. Through community activities, events, and educational outreach, Waterbirth International promotes informed, evidence-based, and patient-centered maternity care and works to make water birth an accessible option for families and care teams.
