Kochi Water Metro is a pioneering initiative designed to enhance urban transport in Kochi, Kerala, by establishing an integrated water transport system. This innovative project seeks to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce pollution, while simultaneously providing easy access to the mainland for residents of the adjacent islands. The Water Metro encompasses a network of 15 routes extending over 76.2 kilometers, utilizing a fleet of 78 modern, environmentally friendly ferries. With 38 jetties planned across ten islands, it aims to serve over 33,000 islanders and promote economic development through tourism and commercial property initiatives.
Beyond ferry services, the project includes improvements to existing roads to enhance connectivity, ensuring a holistic approach to urban infrastructure. Scheduled to operate at intervals of 10 to 20 minutes during peak hours, this socially inclusive transport system focuses on user safety and accessibility. Under a budget of ₹819 crores, supported by Indo-German financial cooperation, Kochi Water Metro promises to transform the region's waterways into vital transport corridors, reshaping daily commutes in this vibrant city.
