Waterways

The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) is an independent national membership charity dedicated to protecting and restoring Britain’s canals and navigable rivers. It campaigns locally and nationally for the country’s waterways, which it describes as valuable outdoor places with distinctive landscapes, heritage and habitats. The association works to secure better funding, promote sustainable boating and safeguard waterways for future generations.

IWA supports the restoration of disused waterways by providing guidance, resources and practical assistance to restoration groups. Its Waterway Recovery Group carries out civil engineering work and supports projects around the country, while local branches connect members with waterways and communities in their areas. The organisation also offers specialist advice through its committees and panels, and runs events, guided walks, talks, meetings and work parties.

People can support IWA by becoming members, donating, volunteering or shopping for waterways-related products, including books, cards and calendars. The association publishes news, campaign updates and resources such as its Waterways Risk Index, and encourages the public to help advocate for canals and rivers with national, regional and local decision-makers.
