About The Watkin Society
The Watkin Society is a heritage organisation dedicated to celebrating the lives and achievements of Absalom and Edward Watkin, two notable figures of the Victorian age. Formed in 2019, the bicentenary year of Edward Watkin’s birth, the Society aims to bring their story to a wider audience beyond Manchester, where both men lived and died.
The Society shares information about the Watkin family and their influence through an online archive of photographs, videos and documents, as well as a family timeline and interactive map. Its resources explore the Watkins’ connections across Europe, Asia and North America and their role in social reform and major changes in British history. Visitors can also discover Rose Hill House, Rose Hill Woods, the Sharstone and the family memorial stone.
The Watkin Society offers heritage activities including the Watkin Walk, which follows in the footsteps of Absalom and Edward, and features project material from the Amazing Watkins exhibition.
