About WCSIC
The Western Canada Sustainable Forestry Initiative Implementation Committee (WCSIC) is dedicated to promoting sustainable forestry practices at the provincial and regional levels. Comprising the BC and Prairie Regional Committees, WCSIC focuses on implementing the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program. This comprehensive system, developed by forestry professionals, conservationists, and scientists, emphasizes the perpetual growth and harvesting of trees while protecting wildlife, plants, and water quality.
The SFI 2022 Forest Management Standards and Rules, based on 13 principles, cover economic, environmental, Indigenous rights, and legal issues, ensuring continuous improvement in sustainable forest management. WCSIC engages stakeholders such as Indigenous peoples, private landowners, government officials, and conservationists. Key activities include outreach, education, training, and reviewing inconsistent practices to uphold SFI standards.
WCSIC encourages participation from forest landowners and managers, guiding them to become certified SFI Program Participants. Through various initiatives and responsibilities, WCSIC promotes sustainable forestry, striving for widespread recognition and support for the SFI program.
