About Wecyclers
Wecyclers is a for-profit social enterprise based in Lagos, Nigeria, dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability, socioeconomic development, and community health. They provide convenient recycling services in densely populated urban neighborhoods, giving households the opportunity to generate value from their waste while providing a reliable supply of raw materials to the local recycling industry. With a mission to address the challenge of urban waste, Wecyclers started in 2012 when only 40% of Lagos' waste was collected and a mere 13% was recycled.
Improper waste disposal posed risks such as property damage, the spread of diseases, and psychological stress. Wecyclers tackles this issue by utilizing their custom-made model of recycling. They use a fleet of cargo bikes called wecycles to collect recyclable waste from households and deliver it to their sorting and packaging hubs.
In return, subscribers to their service receive rewards in the form of points per kilogram of recycled waste, which can be exchanged for essential goods. As Wecyclers has grown, they have expanded their operations to incorporate motorized tricycles, vans, and trucks, allowing them to reach more areas and provide materials to manufacturers. By combining mobile technology, cargo bikes, and incentives, Wecyclers is building a low-cost waste management infrastructure and encouraging recycling habits in low-income communities.
