The Alzheimer’s Disease Caregiver Support Initiative provides free support to adults caring for people with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia in upstate New York. Based at SUNY Plattsburgh’s Center for Neurobehavioral Health, the initiative focuses on northeastern counties, including Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Hamilton, Warren, and Washington. Its goal is to ease caregivers’ financial, emotional, and physical distress while supporting their health and quality of life.
Services include care assessments, county-based Care Navigators who connect families with local programs, and support groups offering information, emotional support, and opportunities to share experiences. The initiative also provides education through community and family programs, webinars, conferences, and online training videos. Additional offerings include a break-from-caregiving project, Project Lifesaver, Memory Cafés, and a wellness program. Caregivers can also find upcoming events and practical guidance through the organization’s blog. Support is available to unpaid caregivers, including family members, partners, friends, and others who assist someone with dementia. The Caregiver Support Line is 1-800-388-0199.
