Wellness in Wellies

Wellness in Wellies is an animal-assisted wellness initiative based at Farrell Farm in South Gloucestershire, between Bristol and Bath. It supports children aged 7–16 in a calm, safe and compassionate environment where they can connect with animals and nature. Its mission is to nurture mental, social, emotional and physical wellbeing through a trauma-informed, strength-based approach that respects each participant’s experiences and needs.

The initiative offers courses for young people, particularly those who are struggling with formal education. Its introductory “Welcome to Wellness in Wellies” course runs for an hour a week over six weeks during term time. Participants work alongside the farm’s animals and explore topics such as relationships, leadership, animal welfare, behaviour and emotions through practical activities including grooming, feeding, leading and obstacle courses. Each student receives a bespoke journal to record their progress and achievements.

Wellness in Wellies also offers Herd Hangout sessions, giving participants a chance to spend time outdoors with the animals, learn skills, build relationships, communicate and work as a team.
