Wendling Beck Environment Project (WBEP) is an innovative initiative focused on habitat creation, nature restoration, and regenerative farming. Located in Norfolk, UK, the project covers nearly 2,000 acres of land north of the town of Dereham. It brings together private landowners, local authorities, environmental NGOs, and Anglian Water to transform land use for environmental benefit while promoting community and environmental resilience.
WBEP is at the forefront of climate resilience and biodiversity conservation, pioneering nature-based solutions on a landscape scale. The project aims to finance its endeavors through the sale of ecosystem services, such as biodiversity net gain, nutrient neutrality, natural flood management, and regenerative farming. By dealing directly with the landowners, developers have a unique advantage.
With a focus on data-driven conservation efforts, WBEP aims to restore rivers and enhance biodiversity, while also sequestering tonnes of carbon. This estimated data has been provided by the University of East Anglia. As the UK faces a biodiversity crisis and the imminent impacts of climate change, the innovative approach taken by WBEP provides new opportunities to incentivize and expedite the necessary changes in land use across the country.
