About Westchester Institute
The Westchester Institute for Ethics and the Human Person was a New York not-for-profit scholarly community founded in 1998 to renew, deepen, and promote the Western tradition of moral reflection. Sponsored by the Legionaries of Christ, a Roman Catholic religious congregation, the Institute’s work was rooted in the Catholic moral tradition. It pursued fundamental research and sought to strengthen contemporary moral discourse in cultural, political, and academic settings, addressing difficult ethical questions facing society.
The Institute brought scholars together through gatherings, interdisciplinary research, research fellowships, seminars, and lecture series. It also published commentary and writing on ethical issues, including a regular column examining moral questions in public life. Through these activities, the organization aimed to encourage reasoned consideration of beliefs, policies, and human behavior, and to contribute to discussion of the moral foundations of democratic life. The website’s available material is an archive of content from 2006 to 2010, when it served as the Institute’s official site.
