West Cumbria Mining Limited (WCM) is a privately owned UK company based in West Cumbria. Their primary focus is producing high-quality metallurgical coal to supply the steel industry in Europe and at home. WCM operates with a commitment to sustainability and responsibility across all their activities.
One of WCM's key initiatives is their Net Zero Operations, which includes a legally binding emissions mitigation scheme. This involves using renewable electricity, an electrical mining fleet, methane capture and elimination, zero-emission transport schemes, and carbon offsetting to minimize their environmental impact. WCM offers premium high-quality steelmaking coal that can be used as a direct replacement for USA coals.
This coal has excellent properties for steelmaking, including ultra-low ash and very low phosphorus content. With efficient infrastructure, WCM can deliver this coal on a 'just-in-time' basis to Europe via various vessel sizes or by rail to UK steelmakers. WCM is dedicated to the well-being and safety of their workforce and aims to provide rewarding long-term employment opportunities to the local community.
They also prioritize their social license to operate by maintaining the highest standards of operational performance and employee relations. In line with their sustainability efforts, WCM has established the WCM Sustainability Fund, which supports local initiatives such as forestry development, renewable energy sources, and a home insulation program.
