About Western Channel Observatory
The Western Channel Observatory (WCO) is a premier marine research hub situated in the Western English Channel, dedicated to monitoring oceanographic data and marine biodiversity. Established in 2006 as a collaboration between the Plymouth Marine Laboratory and the Marine Biological Association, the WCO conducts extensive in situ measurements at key coastal and open shelf stations, L4 and E1. Utilizing advanced technologies such as ecosystem modeling and satellite remote sensing, researchers gather crucial data on vital marine parameters, including light, temperature, salinity, and nutrient levels.
The observatory is renowned for its long-term time-series studies, which contribute to the understanding of ecological dynamics and the impacts of climate change. With over a century of data on zooplankton, phytoplankton, and ongoing observations of benthic communities, the WCO serves as a valuable resource for scientists and policymakers. By integrating diverse research efforts, the WCO plays a pivotal role in marine conservation and sustainable management, making significant contributions to the preservation of our ocean ecosystems.
