About Western Mass Hilltown Hikers
Western Mass Hilltown Hikers Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to connecting people with the natural, cultural, and historic landscapes of Western Massachusetts. Founded by Karen McTaggart and Liz Massa, the organization has offered public hikes and tours since 2010, combining outdoor recreation with education and local history.
Its year-round activities include monthly guided group hikes, historical tours, educational programming, and an annual First Day Hike at Sanderson Brook Falls, organized in partnership with the Department of Conservation and Recreation. The organization also provides extensive trail maps and regional outdoor information to help visitors explore the Hilltowns and Berkshires. Its conservation and heritage work includes documenting and protecting significant sites through field research, GPS, and LIDAR, as well as preserving historic properties.
In 2023, it purchased the Historic Chester Granite Saw and Polishing Works and began work to restore the industrial landmark, create an accessible walking path, add interpretive signage, and protect its original machinery
