About WGfF
The Westdeutsche Gesellschaft für Familienkunde e.V. (WGfF), or West German Society for Genealogy, is a regional genealogical association founded in Cologne in 1913. With more than 2,400 members, it describes itself as Germany’s largest regional genealogy society. Its stated purpose is to promote research and scholarship in genealogy and family history. The society serves the Düsseldorf and Cologne districts of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Koblenz and Trier districts of Rhineland-Palatinate, organizing its activities through twelve local groups.
WGfF supports family-history research with a digital library, whose members can access editions of primary sources such as church registers, civil registers, and tax lists. Its other resources include a central library in Koblenz, local-group libraries, a database of funeral cards, and an emigrant database. The society also publishes genealogical works and sells them through its online shop. Members and visitors can find research guidance, source materials, mailing lists, and information about archives and genealogy tools. Local groups hold meetings, talks, library sessions, and opportunities to exchange research advice and receive assistance.
