The Whitby & District Astronomical Society, established in 1997, emerged from a night class course that began in 1994. This vibrant community of astronomy enthusiasts meets monthly from October to May at Whitby School, and utilizes the Bruce Observatory on Sunday evenings from mid-October to mid-April. Equipped with a 5-inch Cooke refractor, the observatory offers a gateway to the wonders of the cosmos.

Throughout the years, the society has organized hundreds of Star Party events, providing thousands of visitors with the opportunity to enjoy celestial observations. Beyond regular meetings, the society actively participates in outreach initiatives, hosting star evenings for primary schools and contributing to 'Dark Sky' festival events, supported by the North Yorkshire Moors National Parks Authority.

The society also curates trips to astronomy-themed locations, conferences, and scientific projects, fostering a deeper appreciation for the universe among its members and the public.
