Wickerpond is a practical freshwater ecology primer for people creating and caring for small wildlife ponds in temperate gardens. It explains how a pond’s different depths support distinct plants and animals, and guides readers through building a basin with a damp margin, shallow shelf, open water and deep bed. Its construction advice covers choosing a sunny location, shaping a safe beach edge, selecting a liner and filling with rainwater where possible.

Wickerpond also offers a seasonal maintenance guide, with recommendations for managing leaves, silt, water levels, blanketweed and winter ice while minimizing disturbance to wildlife. The site explores pond food webs, showing how leaf litter, algae and bacteria support grazers and invertebrates, which in turn feed amphibians and larger predators. A species index organizes plants and visiting wildlife by pond depth and category, with notes on their habits and suitability.

Wickerpond emphasizes avoiding fish and transferring organisms between ponds, and encourages readers to check local guidance on native, invasive or restricted species before planting
