Wigs For Kids Canada is a private, non-profit organization helping children cope with hair loss by providing custom human-hair replacement systems at no cost to eligible families. Established in 1997 by hair stylist Carlo Turavani, the Canadian chapter serves children aged 18 and younger who have lost their hair because of chemotherapy, radiation, alopecia, trichotillomania, burns, or other medical conditions. Applicants need a medical referral, and assistance is intended for families unable to afford a hairpiece.
Each wig is carefully made to suit a childβs needs and appearance. Donated ponytails are sorted by texture, coloured to match the child, and hand-woven into a durable hairpiece. Producing one can require 15 to 28 ponytails and 30 to 40 hours of work, with costs reaching $2,800. Children receive their systems free, subject to application review and a final fitting.
The organization also welcomes hair and financial donations, relying on community support to continue its work.
