About William Barnes Society
The William Barnes Society celebrates the life, writing and enduring influence of William Barnes, the Dorset poet, philologist, schoolmaster and clergyman. Barnes is particularly renowned for his Dorset dialect poetry, though he also wrote in standard English. His work was admired by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and is considered to have influenced Thomas Hardy and Gerard Manley Hopkins. A scholar of language, Barnes taught himself to read around sixty languages and wrote in defence of native English. His wide-ranging interests also included music, engraving, wood turning and local heritage.
Based in Dorset, the Society helps people explore Barnes’s legacy through a year-round programme of talks, poetry readings, recitals, excursions and other cultural events. Activities connect audiences with his writing and with places associated with his life and work. The Society also shares articles, news and information about Barnes, and supports projects relating to his literary heritage, including fundraising for his archive.
