William Byrd Singers

The William Byrd Singers is a chamber choir based in Manchester and recognised as one of the North West’s foremost ensembles. Formed more than fifty years ago under its first conductor, Stephen Wilkinson MBE, the choir has built a reputation for ambitious programming, musical depth and a warm community spirit. Its current musical director, Keith Orrell, is retiring after seventeen years, and the choir is celebrating his contribution with a special season while beginning the search for a successor.

The choir presents concerts spanning a wide range of choral music, from works by Bach, Byrd, Handel and Purcell to pieces by Hindemith, Vierne and Wylkynson. Upcoming performances include Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, and Monteverdi’s Vespers. The William Byrd Singers also offers workshops and “Come and Sing” events, inviting singers of varied backgrounds to take part, including a shared performance of Handel’s Messiah. Experienced singers can enquire about auditions, while supporters can attend concerts, join the mailing list or contribute in other ways.
