South Wimbledon Shorinji Kempo Dojo is a martial arts school in Wimbledon, London, founded in October 2016. A member of the British Shorinji Kempo Federation and the International Kempo Association, the dojo teaches Shorinji Kempo, a modern Japanese martial art with Chinese roots and a focus on practical self-defence. Its training is designed for people of different fitness levels and emphasizes technique and physical principles rather than relying on strength alone.
Classes combine striking and grappling, including punches, kicks, blocks, escapes, locks, throws, takedowns and ground holds. Training also incorporates seiho therapeutic acupressure, seated meditation known as Zazen, and the practical philosophy of Kongo Zen. The dojo presents these practices as a way to develop physical health, confidence, cooperation and a calm, healthy mind alongside self-defence skills.
South Wimbledon Shorinji Kempo Dojo offers beginner classes, with sessions advertised on Monday and Thursday evenings. Beginners can try the first two weeks free. The dojo describes its environment as friendly and welcoming, and invites prospective students to book a class.
