WINEDEX is a wine authentication and traceability project designed to help protect fine wines as their value and resale activity grow. Developed by iDealwine, a European leader in online wine auctions, in partnership with technology consultancy VISEO, the service connects each participating bottle to a secure digital record built on the Ethereum blockchain.
Bottles are fitted with tamper-evident RFID tags that link them to more than 90 recorded details, including wine and vintage information, expert assessment, and provenance. Through the WINEDEX app for iOS and Android, owners can scan bottles, view verified information, and access certificates of authenticity. They can also save wines in a digital cellar. Buyers and other permitted users can consult bottle details, with sensitive information such as purchase price and buyer identity restricted according to access rights.
WINEDEX is aimed particularly at the secondary wine market, including auction transactions, and is intended to expand across the wine industry. A planned ownership-transfer feature would support tracking bottles as they change hands.
