WIOMSA, the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association, is a prominent regional brand that was established in 1993. It is a non-profit, membership organization registered in Zanzibar, Tanzania in 1994. WIOMSA is dedicated to the advancement of marine sciences in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region, which includes 10 countries: Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, Comoros, Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius, and Réunion (France).

Their goal is to promote educational, scientific, and technological development in all aspects of marine sciences. WIOMSA offers a wide range of products and services to support their mission. They focus on capacity development, communication, and dissemination of information, and partnership building.

Additionally, they have various initiatives and projects, including research support, climate change adaptation, ecosystem and biodiversity conservation, and marine pollution management. WIOMSA also facilitates the creation of marine protected areas and monitors the marine litter. They take pride in their multidisciplinary membership base, extensive networks, and their ability to work effectively at local to global levels.
