Wits VIDA, the Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics Research Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand, is an African-led research organisation combining clinical, microbiological and epidemiological expertise. With more than 25 years of research experience, the unit works to improve health through scientific discoveries and evidence that can inform public health policy in Africa and globally.
Its research focuses on vaccines and infectious diseases, including next-generation vaccines for rotavirus and tuberculosis, and vaccine approaches to protect pregnant women and young infants from sepsis and pneumonia. Other areas include influenza, Group B streptococcus, pneumococcal disease, childhood pneumonia and diarrhoeal disease, HIV-exposed children, and COVID-19 epidemiology. The unit also studies the vaginal microbiome and pregnancy outcomes, and contributes to child mortality surveillance through the CHAMPS programme.
VIDA conducts clinical trials, laboratory and basic science research, and observational studies. It also shares findings through publications, news and public resources, and offers career and academic opportunities. Its work aims to support healthier communities and help shape vaccine research, prevention strategies and health policy.
