The Women’s Legal Centre is an independently funded, non-profit African feminist legal organisation founded in Cape Town in 1999. It works to advance women’s rights and equality in South Africa, with a focus on developing feminist jurisprudence and improving access to justice, particularly for women facing marginalisation and discrimination. The Centre takes strategic test cases free of charge to challenge discriminatory laws and legal principles, and provides legal advice and consultation. Its work also includes advocacy, education and training, supported by partnerships and coalitions.
The organisation focuses on five areas: fair working conditions for vulnerable women workers, including domestic, farm, migrant and sex workers; equitable access to land, housing and property; women’s rights and access to resources within relationships and after separation; sexual and reproductive health and rights; and protection from violence, including access to responsive services and state protection. Through litigation, public engagement and education, the Women’s Legal Centre seeks to address barriers to women exercising their constitutional rights and to advance lasting legal and social change.
