About WLLR
The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway is a historically rich attraction in Mid Wales, established in 1903 to connect local farming communities with the market town of Welshpool. Initially operated by Cambrian Railways, and later taken over by the Great Western Railway and British Railways, the line ceased passenger service in 1931 and closed in 1956. However, a dedicated group of enthusiasts revived the railway in 1963, and it now offers delightful steam train journeys through stunning countryside.
With a unique 2ft 6in gauge to navigate the region’s rolling hills, visitors can enjoy scenic rides featuring charming balconied carriages. Travelers might encounter local wildlife, including herons and deer, as the train traverses picturesque landscapes and historic sites. The railway is operated by a charitable organization supported by volunteers and offers various experiences, including group charters and driver experiences. Discover the nostalgia of train travel while exploring the breathtaking beauty of Mid Wales with Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway.
