About West Office
West Office Exhibition Design is a team of designers, planners, researchers, and writers who excel at conveying complex ideas in creative and enjoyable ways. As exhibit designers and developers, they express their love for learning, making, teaching, and traveling through their work. Their exhibits are designed to challenge assumptions, engage intellectually, ignite creativity, and inspire fun.
Located in the emerging West Oakland arts district, their design studio features drafting and modeling stations, a prototyping shop, and meeting and brainstorming spaces. The studio itself is filled with artifacts, fabrication models, and memories of their impressive portfolio spanning over three decades. The building has a modernized warehouse aesthetic, previously used as a canning facility in the early 20th century and currently occupied by a diverse community of creative professionals.
Established in 1985 by Andy Kramer, West Office gained recognition for their groundbreaking design of highly interactive exhibits for a science museum in Hong Kong. Since then, they have garnered a reputation for their ability to create original and complex exhibitry. Notable clients include the California Science Center, the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, and Levi Strauss & Co.
Under the leadership of Steve Wiersema, who took over in 2013 after 20 years with the company, West Office has made Oakland their home. Through creative storytelling and innovative experiences, the team continues to create engaging experiences for people of all ages.
