Majors Creek Wombat Refuge is a volunteer-run, self-funded wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre in South Eastern New South Wales. Founded in 2002 by Bill and Les Waterhouse, the refuge cares for orphaned and injured wombats, with the goal of nursing each animal back to health and releasing it into the wild. Its work ranges from feeding hairless baby wombats, known as pinkies, every four hours to rescuing and rehabilitating injured adults, with care provided around the clock.
Raising an orphaned wombat can take up to 2. 5 years and cost around $1,400. The refuge receives no government assistance for its ongoing care and relies on public donations and animal sponsorships to help fund milk, food, refuge compounds and grazing yards.
It also acknowledges support from the Native Animal Rescue Group, which subsidises milk for baby wombats. The refuge shares news and information about wombat rescue and rehabilitation, and may arrange visits by prior contact when possible. It is a private home and working refuge, not a commercial zoo
