About Women & Gender Constituency
The Women & Gender Constituency (WGC) is a vital stakeholder group within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Comprising 33 women's and environmental civil society organizations, the WGC was established in 2009 to ensure that women's voices and rights are integrated into the UNFCCC framework. With a focus on building a sustainable and just future, the WGC actively participates in UNFCCC meetings, working alongside the Secretariat, governments, and civil society observers.
The WGC's core goals are to formalize the voice of women's and gender civil society organizations, advocate for common positions, and champion gender equality and women's rights in all climate actions. Additionally, the WGC aims to challenge the patriarchal economic model that has contributed to the climate crisis. The WGC operates under the principles of democratic governance, inclusive membership, transparent procedures, and effective communication.
By providing a platform for women's leadership and advocating for gender-responsive climate solutions, the WGC plays a crucial role in shaping a just and sustainable future
