About Women of the Wall
Women of the Wall, also known as Neshot Hakotel הכותל נשות in Hebrew, is a group of Jewish women from Israel and around the world who are dedicated to fighting for their right to wear prayer shawls, pray, and read from the Torah collectively and aloud at the Western Wall (Kotel) in Jerusalem, Israel. As Judaism's most sacred holy site and a symbol of Jewish peoplehood and sovereignty, the Western Wall holds great significance. Women of the Wall strives to create a space where women can freely engage in prayer and rituals.
The group is made up of women from different denominations of Judaism, including Orthodox, Reform, Conservative, Masorti, Renewal, and Reconstructionist. Not only does Women of the Wall seek empowerment through group prayer and Torah reading, but it also aims for legal and religious recognition of their prayer services. With a diverse membership that spans the political spectrum, Women of the Wall promotes a message of tolerance and pluralism.
