About WOMEN SMILES UGANDA
Women Smiles Uganda is a social enterprise that is dedicated to empowering women and youth living in vulnerable communities in Africa. Established in 2018, Women Smiles Uganda aims to disrupt hunger and poverty through adaptable and affordable vertical farming solutions. They have been recognized for their impactful work, being named as one of the Top 50 Organizations to connect with in Africa by the Tony Elumelu Foundation. They have also received awards such as the 2019 Takeda Entrepreneurship Award and the Youth in Agroecology Business Track Africa 2022 award. Additionally, Women Smiles Uganda has been recognized by prestigious organizations like the Obama Foundation, Westerwelle Foundation, and One Young World for their efforts in combating hunger and improving conditions for women, teenage mothers, and youth.
Climate change poses a threat to agricultural productivity and food systems, and this particularly affects women in Africa due to social inequality and gender-based challenges. To address this issue, Women Smiles Uganda designs eco-friendly vertical farms and engages their beneficiaries in waste management practices such as recycling plastic for use in farming units. Their team, led by Lilian Nakigozi, the Founder and CEO, consists of passionate individuals who are committed to making a positive change. With their tailored solutions and innovative approach, Women Smiles Uganda is working towards a future where communities have access to sustainable food sources and women and youth are empowered to thrive.
