Island Institute

The Island Institute, established in 1999, is dedicated to enhancing the capacity and vitality of Maine's island and coastal communities. Through the Island Institute Fellows program, the organization connects recent college graduates with local town governments and nonprofits, enabling them to engage in impactful projects that address critical issues such as climate change, education, and community resources. Over 25 years, the program has paired 149 fellows with these communities, fostering professional development while addressing local needs.

Fellows work on diverse projects, ranging from developing sustainable seafood initiatives to supporting local libraries and schools, under the mentorship of community advisors. This collaborative effort not only benefits the communities but also empowers fellows to pursue meaningful careers in various fields, including education, policy, and marine economy. The Island Institute is committed to sustaining Maine's coastal regions by connecting them with vital resources, skills, and insights, ensuring they thrive in an ever-changing world.
