Workrave is a free software program designed to support recovery from and help prevent repetitive strain injury (RSI) associated with computer use. Available for GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows, it monitors keyboard and mouse activity and uses that information to encourage healthier work habits through configurable reminders and usage limits.
The program offers three main types of breaks. Microbreak reminders prompt users to pause briefly, typically for about 30 seconds every three minutes, while rest-break alerts encourage longer breaks away from the computer, often around 10 minutes every 45 minutes. Users can adjust the timing and duration of both. Workrave also tracks daily computer use and can prompt users to stop when they reach a configured daily limit.
For users who want to review their habits, Workrave provides statistics on computer time across daily, weekly and monthly periods, as well as breaks taken, ignored or postponed. The project offers downloads, documentation, FAQs, support information and opportunities to contribute through its website.
