International Aluminium Institute

The International Aluminium Institute (IAI) is the global representative body for the primary aluminium industry. Established in 1972, it brings together expertise from across the industry’s value chain to promote understanding of aluminium and support responsible production and sustainable development. The institute serves industry stakeholders, policymakers and the wider public through research, events, educational resources and global statistics.

IAI’s work covers mining and refining, primary production, transport, packaging, recycling, health and safety, and aluminium’s role in building and consumer products. Its online resources include information on the aluminium life cycle, production processes, environmental impacts, and the metal’s properties and uses. The institute also maintains an extensive data repository covering production, energy consumption, emissions and workplace safety.

To advance sustainability, IAI coordinates initiatives such as the Aluminium Industry Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which tracks sector targets and emissions progress, and shares analysis of pathways to reduce greenhouse gases. It also highlights innovation and recycling developments, publishes technical guidance and reports, and convenes international conferences and industry events.
