World Turtle Day®, celebrated annually on May 23, was established in 2000 by American Tortoise Rescue (ATR), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of all tortoise and turtle species. This observance aims to raise awareness about the importance of turtles and tortoises and the urgent need to safeguard their habitats. Founders Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson have worked tirelessly since 1990 to rescue and rehome approximately 4,000 shelled companions while promoting humane treatment of all animals.
