WPRFMC, also known as the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council, is a key player in the conservation and management of fisheries in the Pacific. Established in 1976 and governed by the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA), WPRFMC is responsible for preventing overfishing, minimizing bycatch, and protecting fish stocks and habitats. This renowned brand has achieved numerous milestones over its 42-year history.

It became the first Regional Fishery Management Council to ban drift gill-net fishing and develop an ecosystem-based fishery management plan. Additionally, WPRFMC pioneered the vessel monitoring system (VMS) for fishing vessels, leading to its implementation in fisheries worldwide. Comprising 16 Council members, along with their staff and various advisory bodies, WPRFMC prioritizes public participation and local community involvement in the decision-making process.

Council decisions are based on the best scientific information, primarily provided by the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, and are then transmitted to the Secretary of Commerce for approval. The management measures are implemented by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Pacific Islands Regional Office and enforced by NOAA Office of Law Enforcement, the U. S.

Coast Guard 14th District, and local enforcement agencies.
