Sweden Underground
@wtc2025.com
Sweden has a long and proud tradition of underground construction and rock engineering. Our progress has been shaped by strong rock conditions and close collaboration between owners, consultants, contractors, and equipment manufacturers — a model that continues to drive innovation and technical excellence. Early applications of underground space in Sweden included hydroelectric power plants, transport tunnels, and military facilities such as public shelters. The expertise gained from these projects laid the foundation for Sweden’s global reputation in rock engineering, tunnelling, and mining — knowledge that has since been shared and refined around the world. The Swedish Rock Engineering Association (Svenska Bergteknikforeningen) embodies this collaborative spirit, representing and promoting all aspects of the Swedish tunnelling and mining industry through international networks such as ITA-AITES (International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association) and EFEE (European Federation of Explosives Engineers). Today, Sweden continues to lead the way in sustainable underground development — from some of the world’s most complex road tunnel projects and new metro systems to tunnelling and mining at great depths. Large underground caverns are also being developed for energy storage and fossil-free steel production. Sweden Underground serves as a platform to highlight Swedish expertise, innovation, and collaboration in rock engineering and underground construction — connecting professionals, sharing knowledge, and promoting sustainable solutions for the future.

About Sweden Underground
Welcome to World Tunnel Congress 2025! This year, we gather in Stockholm, Sweden to explore the theme of "Tunnelling into a sustainable future – methods and technologies." Sweden is proud to be leading the charge towards sustainability, aiming to become one of the first nations with net greenhouse gas emissions below zero by 2045.
With a rich history of innovation in underground construction, Sweden has built impressive infrastructure such as the Bypass Stockholm, a complex underground road tunnel network, and a new metro system featuring one of the deepest underground stations accessible only by elevators. Sweden also champions the use of large rock caverns to store liquid hydrogen for the production of fossil-free steel.
The World Tunnel Congress 2025 provides a platform for global collaboration, where knowledge and experiences can be shared among experts and professionals in the industry. Join us as we continue to push the boundaries of underground construction and work towards a sustainable future.
