WTINFO

Tornado Research Project WTINFO is a Germany-based, nonprofit initiative focused on documenting and assessing tornadoes and other severe-weather damage. Led by Björn Stumpf and staffed by trained volunteers, the project has conducted climate and extreme-weather research since 2008. Its work supports a more complete understanding of severe weather by mapping damage as accurately as possible, including cases involving suspected tornadoes.

The team investigates storm-damage patterns and wind fields, distinguishing convergent and divergent flows to help identify the meteorological cause of an event. Its services include on-site damage surveys, digital mapping and verification, and satellite-assisted measurement of storm and debris damage. When a tornado is suspected, the project aims to respond around the clock and digitize observed damage promptly. Analyses are also reviewed by independent meteorologists and geologists as part of its quality-control process.

WTINFO accepts photographs and videos for assessment and provides WTMap, a beta mapping tool designed for viewing maps on smartphones in landscape orientation.
