WV GEAR UP

West Virginia GEAR UP is a federally funded initiative dedicated to empowering students across eleven counties in West Virginia by preparing them for post-secondary education and training. The program, which stands for "Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs," aims to increase the number of students pursuing college degrees and skillset certifications. Managed by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, GEAR UP collaborates with various educational entities and community partners to deliver valuable resources and support.

Throughout its ongoing cycles, GEAR UP offers a range of free services, including college campus tours, tutoring, ACT/SAT preparation workshops, financial aid guidance, and summer academies focused on college readiness. Additional statewide initiatives include College Application and Exploration Week, FAFSA Completion Campaigns, and leadership academies, fostering a college-going culture within the schools served.

Eligible participants consist of students from the classes of 2027 and 2028, as well as current seniors graduating from participating high schools, ensuring they receive holistic support during their academic journey.
