About WWLLN
WWLLN, the World Wide Lightning Location Network, is a global network that monitors lightning activity across the entire Earth. Operated by the University of Washington in Seattle, WWLLN uses a network of very low frequency (VLF) radio lightning sensors to track lightning discharges and produce regular maps of lightning activity worldwide.
With over 70 sensors strategically placed around the globe, WWLLN collects data to accurately locate lightning strokes. Each stroke location requires input from a minimum of 5 sensors, ensuring precise and reliable data. The network's goal is to expand its sensor coverage globally, aiming for around 500 uniformly spaced sensors to cover the entire Earth effectively.
If you're interested in hosting a WWLLN lightning sensor or accessing archival data, the network provides information and resources to support your research needs. For more details on publications or data availability, visit the WWLLN website. Join the network in monitoring and understanding global lightning activity.
