ERDI is an African immersive technology organisation founded in Lagos in 2016 to help the continent create, rather than simply consume, extended reality (XR). Its work brings together three initiatives: Imisi 3D, a free public XR creation lab in Yaba; ARVR Africa, a professional community supporting meetups, hackathons and collaboration across the continent; and VR for Schools, which delivers curriculum-aligned immersive learning sessions in Nigerian public schools.
The Imisi 3D lab has welcomed visitors on weekdays without fees or applications since July 2016, offering access to VR and mixed-reality headsets, 360-degree cameras, computers, software, courses and maker equipment. ERDI’s programmes have engaged more than 100,000 people and involved hackathon participants from 42 African countries. The organisation also operates XR labs in Lagos, Kigali, Maputo and Dakar, and has partnered with institutions including UNICEF and Nigeria’s Universal Basic Education Commission. Through public access, education, research and community-building, ERDI works to develop a connected African XR ecosystem and broaden who can create and benefit from immersive technology.
