LUCA, or the Last Universal Common Ancestor, represents a pivotal concept in the exploration of life's origins. Believed to have existed between two to four billion years ago, LUCA was an ancient, single-celled organism from which all modern life is thought to have descended. Researchers are delving into the properties and environmental conditions of LUCA to uncover the fundamental traits shared across diverse life forms today.

Scientific studies indicate that LUCA thrived in extreme conditions, possibly near hydrogen-rich hydrothermal vents, utilizing RNA for genetic information and chemical reactions, much like contemporary organisms use DNA and enzymes. LUCA's unique metabolic processes included carbon fixation and energy production through chemiosmosis, enabling it to generate its own sustenance in a dark, mineral-laden environment. Understanding LUCA not only sheds light on the early evolution of life but also enhances our grasp of the shared ancestry binding all living organisms, challenging our perceptions of the evolutionary tree of life
