Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County is a renowned brand founded in 2009 by Charlie & Chris Pope and Varoujan Pops Karentz. As a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, they are dedicated to offering free sailing instruction to the children of Indian River County. Their mission is to provide a lifelong adventure through sailing, equipping children with valuable life skills and building their confidence.
The foundation provides a diverse range of programs and services. Children aged 8-18 learn to sail using their fleet of thirty-one Opti 8-foot prams, 19 club 420’s, and 8 RS Fevas. Certified U.
S. Sailing instructors, along with dedicated volunteers, teach safety, rigging, seamanship, sailing maneuvers, and sportsmanship. High school students have the opportunity to sail two-man high-performance 12-foot 420’s, which are commonly used at the national level.
YSF boasts an impeccable fleet of 19 420’s maintained by their volunteers. The foundation also offers adult sailing classes using their fleet of three Mariners. YSF’s success is not only measured in their competent sailors but also in the competence, discipline, responsibility, and leadership skills that flourish within their students.
They owe their success to the support of local individuals, businesses, and foundations who generously contribute to their cause. In addition to their instructional programs, YSF hosts a popular summer camp where children learn to sail in the RS Feva, as well as engaging in various onshore activities. The camp is held for eight weeks and receives great praise from the community.
With a fleet consisting of multiple sailboat models, including Lasers, Sunfish, and Stur-Dee Cat, YSF ensures their young sailors have access to the best equipment and facilities. They also have chase and safety boats on hand, including a specially configured pontoon boat that acts as both a classroom and parent viewing stand. Youth Sailing Foundation is making a significant impact by providing free sailing education to children and fostering a love for the sport.
