About Zanzibar Energy
The Department of Energy and Minerals (DoEM) is an essential agency under the Ministry of Water and Energy (MWE) in Zanzibar. Led by Hon. Salama Aboud Talib, the DoEM is responsible for managing and overseeing all energy-related matters in the region. This includes working closely with the Zanzibar Electricity Corporation (ZECO) and developing and implementing the Energy Policy.
With a dedicated team of 35 employees, including 10 management and professional staff, the DoEM acts as an executive agent for all energy sub-sectors. They collaborate with established energy institutions, provide assistance for energy policy implementation, and promote awareness of safe energy utilization and renewable resources.
Additionally, the DoEM advises the government on energy-related issues and acts as a consultant for other sectors in energy development. Although they do not have direct authority over ZECO operations or electricity tariffs, these areas fall under the jurisdiction of the newly established economic regulator, ZURA.
Through their expertise and commitment, the DoEM contributes to the sustainable energy development and economic growth of Zanzibar.
