Zavod za Podvodno Arheologijo – ZaPA is a private non-profit institute that brings together archaeologists and other experts in underwater heritage from various Slovenian archaeological institutions and private entities. Our institute aims to collaborate in the areas of preservation, research, promotion, and presentation of underwater archaeological heritage. We operate as a project-based and interdisciplinary organization since we do not have permanent employees.

Our work builds upon the century-long tradition of underwater research in Slovenia, which has been carried out by various institutions and individuals. So far, our institute has successfully executed numerous major and minor research projects for the protection of underwater heritage in Slovenian rivers, lakes, and sea. We also contribute to archaeological research abroad, particularly in Croatia, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.

Our work often involves conducting methodologically and technically demanding projects, including research in conditions of poor or zero visibility, fast river currents, and cold or contaminated water. Through our work, we aim to highlight the significance and diversity of underwater cultural heritage in Slovenia by participating in various exhibitions, lectures, experimental archaeology projects, international events, and engaging directly with the interested public
