About Zen Studies
The Zen Studies Society, based in New York, is a Buddhist community committed to discovering and actualizing our true nature. Our mission is to cultivate an environment of respect, harmony, deep insight, and boundless compassion. Under the guidance of ZSS, we provide the teachings and practice of Zen Buddhism at our mountain monastery and city temple.
Established in 1956, the Zen Studies Society is one of the oldest Zen Buddhist organizations in the United States. Our temples have now reopened for in-person practice and events, following our Health Protocols. Additionally, we continue to offer online teachings, meetings, and sittings.
Our mountain monastery, Dai Bosatsu Zendo, offers a serene and inspiring setting for Zen practice. It welcomes serious lay and ordained Zen students of all religious and cultural backgrounds for traditional residential monastic training periods and retreats. Meanwhile, our city temple, New York Zendo, is an oasis of stillness amid the hustle and bustle of Manhattan.
