Zettlr

Zettlr is a free, open-source writing application designed to support the full journey from early notes to finished publications. Available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, it helps researchers, journalists, and other writers organize projects, develop ideas, and prepare work for submission. Files remain on the user’s computer, with no forced cloud synchronization, telemetry, or hidden costs; update checks can also be disabled.

The app combines note-taking and project management tools, including powerful search, outlines, internal links, and a graph view for connecting ideas. It supports Zettelkasten workflows and integrates with reference managers such as Zotero, JabRef, and Juris-M, with more than 9,000 citation styles available. Writers can customize the interface, use snippets, and render LaTeX equations and Mermaid charts. Zettlr also offers export profiles powered by Pandoc, enabling papers to be formatted with templates for journals and conferences, as well as presentations for Beamer, reveal.js, and PowerPoint. Documentation, community forums, and other support resources help users configure the application and adapt it to their workflows.
